The holiday season means parties, shopping and movies. This year brings a new animated feature, Rise of the Guardians, based on William Joyce’s series of children’s picture books and novels, The Guardians of Childhood. The story follows Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and the silent Sandman as they unite to fight off the boogeyman, Pitch Black. They also get a big hand from the star of the movie Jack Frost. My wife and I took the boys this Sunday, and I had to share.
This is not a review of the movie, but if you are a parent wanting to take your kids, please check out this Common Sense Media Review for parents.
Back to why I decided to post about a children’s movie.
There is a point in the movie where Santa raises a key question to Jack Frost: What is your center? In other words, what are you all about? And what are you meant to do in the world? That’s something Jack Frost has to figure out.
This question had me. I think many people can write a list of things that they would consider their center. But what is that ONE thing? Post that question to yourself and understand what your center is.
Now what if your child(ren) could answer that question. This is a great opportunity for your child(ren) to understand what their center is. It of course may be a little early in life for your 8 year old to understand what they are meant to do in the world, but understanding what it means I think is just as important. If they understand what Jack discovered about himself, it may help them understand the question.
A few questions you can ask your child(ren):
- What does Santa mean when he tells Jack he has to find his “center”? Do you think real people have a “center” that dictates what they’re passionate about and how they act?
And while you are at it, ask yourself the same question… I sure did.
